New to the game?
What is Magic: The Gathering?
Magic: The Gathering is the original trading card game, created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. Each player builds a deck of lands, creatures and spells and casts them to reduce their opponents from 20 life to zero.
How a game plays
Each turn you play lands to make mana, then spend that mana to cast creatures, instants, sorceries and other spells. Attack with your creatures, block with defenders, and use removal and combat tricks to control the board until an opponent runs out of life.
Read the official how-to-play guide →What are the most valuable Star Trek cards?
The most valuable card in Star Trek is U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class at around £75.71.
What's new in Star Trek?
Star Trek is a Standard-legal Universes Beyond set, so it plays in Standard, Commander and everything in between. The crews come from right across the franchise: Kirk and Spock from The Original Series, Picard, Riker, Worf and Beverly Crusher from The Next Generation, Benjamin Sisko from Deep Space Nine, Janeway and Seven of Nine from Voyager, Hoshi Sato and T'Pol from Enterprise, Brad Boimler and Badgey from Lower Decks and Pelia from Strange New Worlds, plus film favourites such as Saavik, Kruge, General Chang, V'Ger and the humpback whales.
Assimilate
New keyword action. The Borg's signature mechanic. When you assimilate a creature, it comes under your control with a +1/+1 counter and becomes a Borg artifact creature, losing its other creature types. The Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest assimilates a creature card straight out of an opponent's graveyard and pumps every artifact creature you control.
Federation
New ability word. Federation cards reward a diverse crew: they count the number of different creature types among the non-Borg creatures you control. Hoshi Sato, Exolinguist digs deeper into your library the more varied your crew, and Saavik, Stoic Student deals damage equal to that count.
Face a dilemma
New trigger. You face a dilemma whenever you choose one or more modes for a spell or ability. Cards that care about it reward the choice itself, whatever you pick: Seven of Nine draws you a card every time.
Beam me up
New keyword. Beam me up lets you cast a spell again from your graveyard for its beam me up cost, as long as you also return a creature you control to its owner's hand. Open Communications draws a card, then can be beamed back later.
Strange new worlds
New ability word. Strange new worlds cards count the differently named lands you control, so exploring pays off. The set backs it up with ten common Planet gainlands, from Vulcan and Qo'noS to Bajor and Earth, Sector 001, and Explore returns as a cameo mechanic. Saurian Explorer even makes you a brand new Planet land.
Spacecraft and Station
Returning from Edge of Eternities. Starships are Spacecraft. You station them by tapping your other creatures to add charge counters equal to their power, and once a ship has enough counters it becomes an artifact creature. The U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class rewards you with an extra card to play each turn you charge it.
Every species gets its own type
New creature types. There are no Alien cards in Star Trek. Instead every species has its own creature type, 26 new ones in all, including Vulcan, Klingon, Romulan, Ferengi, Borg, Q, Trill and Tribble: the most new creature types in one set since Mirage. Starfleet personnel share the new Officer type, which makes the Federation's count-the-types cards easy to build around.
Collector treatments
Showcase and chase cards. Showcase frames come in four styles: LCARS, styled on the Starfleet computer display (including all ten shock lands), Classic Enterprise, Klingon and Schematics. Klingon showcase cards also come printed in the Klingon language, and those appear only in Collector Boosters. There are borderless Station lands, extended art cards, scene cards that join up into one big picture, and Surge Foil versions of the showcase cards in Collector Boosters.
Signed headliner cards
A first for Magic. For the first time, Magic has cards signed by the actors themselves. Seven textless headliner cards were hand-signed in the text box: Kirk by William Shatner, Picard by Patrick Stewart, Spock by Ethan Peck, Data by Brent Spiner, Janeway by Kate Mulgrew, Seven of Nine by Jeri Ryan and Geordi La Forge by LeVar Burton. There are about 250 of each, randomly inserted into Collector Boosters of any language, and the signed card is always in English.

Is Star Trek worth it?
Our take, based on the cards and products revealed so far.
For players. Assimilate and Federation give Star Trek two clear deck themes, and because the set is Standard-legal it reaches well beyond Commander. Draft Night and Play Boosters make it a good set to open with friends.
For collectors. The signed headliner cards are a first for Magic and the ultimate chase, with LCARS, Classic Enterprise and Klingon showcase frames, Klingon-language cards and Surge Foils filling out the Collector Booster.
Worth it if
- You play Commander: each Star Trek Commander deck is a ready-to-play 100-card deck.
- You want to draft or play Sealed with friends: Draft Night or a Play Booster Box is the way in.
- You want the showcase and headliner cards: they live in Collector Boosters.
Think twice if
- You only want one or two specific cards: buying the singles is cheaper than chasing them in packs.
- You are hoping to open a signed headliner card: there are only about 250 of each.

Is there a full card list for Star Trek?
Yes. This guide has the full 135-card booster checklist with card images, search and rarity filters.
Are the Star Trek Commander cards in Play Boosters?
No. The 41 new Commander cards come in the four Star Trek Commander decks (Federation Fleet, Landing Party, Klingon Fury and We Are the Borg), not in Play Boosters.

No. The main Star Trek set is Standard-legal, so it plays in Standard as well as Commander and other formats.

No. A Beginner Box was planned but Wizards cancelled it because of production and shipping delays. New players can start with the five Star Trek Welcome decks or a Commander deck instead.
