Mega Excadrill ex at a glance
- Accelerate Metal Energy via Metang, evolve into Mega Excadrill ex, and hit for up to 330 damage while milling your opponent's deck.
- Suits players who enjoy multi-stage evolution decks with layered setup and a strong secondary pressure plan.
- Medium difficulty - one Stage 2 line in Metagross sits alongside the Stage 1 Mega Excadrill ex line.
How Mega Excadrill ex wins
The deck's engine starts with Genesect ex. Its Metallic Signal Ability lets you search your deck for up to two Evolution Metal Pokémon and put them into your hand once per turn. In practice that means pulling Metang and Metagross copies early, or fetching the Mega Excadrill ex you need to attack. Getting Genesect ex active on your first or second turn sets up everything that follows.
Metang is the energy accelerator the whole plan depends on. Its Metal Maker Ability lets you look at the top four cards of your deck and attach any number of Basic Metal Energy cards you find there to your Pokémon in any way you like, shuffling the rest to the bottom. With four copies of Metang available, you can trigger Metal Maker once per Metang per turn - spreading Metal Energy across your Bench and loading Mega Excadrill ex far faster than a single manual attachment would allow. Fifteen Basic Metal Energy in the deck means Metal Maker reliably finds something to attach.
Once Mega Excadrill ex is ready, the attacks are straightforward but punishing. Undermine costs two Metal Energy, does 90 damage, and discards the top two cards of your opponent's deck - useful early when you want to attack without committing five Energy. Maximum Drilling costs three Metal Energy and does 200 damage base; if this Pokémon has at least two extra Energy attached beyond that three-Energy cost, the attack does 130 more damage for a total of 330. That threshold is reachable with the Metal Maker engine running across multiple Metang.
Metagross provides a secondary attacking route and disruption. Bounce Back for one Metal Energy does 60 damage and switches out your opponent's Active Pokémon, with your opponent choosing the replacement. Metallic Hammer costs four Energy and does 150 damage base, or 300 if you discard three Metal Energy from Metagross. Energy Recycler is in the list specifically to shuffle up to five Basic Energy from your discard pile back into your deck, keeping the supply available for Metal Maker to find again. Shaymin's Flower Curtain Ability prevents all damage done to your Benched Pokémon that don't have a Rule Box by your opponent's attacks, protecting the Metang and Beldum sitting on your Bench while they wait to use Metal Maker or evolve.

Your first turns, and what to aim for
Your opening priority is getting Beldum and Drilbur onto the Bench as quickly as possible. Buddy-Buddy Poffin searches for up to two Basic Pokémon with 70 HP or less, which covers both Beldum at 70 HP and Drilbur at 70 HP simultaneously. Brock's Scouting fetches up to two Basic Pokémon or one Evolution Pokémon from your deck, giving you another route to the same targets. Drilbur's Call for Family attack searches for up to two Basic Pokémon and puts them onto your Bench, which is useful if you find yourself without Items in your opener. Get Genesect ex into play early so Metallic Signal can pull Metang and Metagross copies into your hand on the same turn.
From the second turn onwards, evolve Beldum into Metang and start using Metal Maker every turn. Each Metang checks the top four cards of your deck and attaches any Basic Metal Energy found there to your Pokémon in any way you like. Spread Energy onto the Drilbur or Mega Excadrill ex you intend to attack with, and keep a Metang or two on the Bench to continue accelerating. Once Mega Excadrill ex is in the Active Spot with five or more Metal Energy attached, Maximum Drilling hits for 330 damage. If Energy runs low, Energy Recycler shuffles up to five Basic Energy from your discard pile back into your deck, refreshing the supply Metal Maker can find.
Team Rocket's Petrel is your turn-to-turn consistency tool. Four copies let you search for whichever Trainer fits the moment - Pokégear 3.0 to dig for a Supporter, Switch to reposition, or Secret Box when you need to find an Item, Tool, Supporter, and Stadium all at once by discarding three cards from your hand. Fezandipiti ex's Flip the Script Ability draws you three cards on any turn where one of your Pokémon was Knocked Out during your opponent's last turn, softening the blow of losing an attacker. Shaymin's Flower Curtain Ability protects your Benched non-Rule Box Pokémon - including all your Metang and Beldum - from your opponent's attacks throughout the game.

Mega Excadrill ex, answered
Quick answers about playing and building this deck.
01Is Mega Excadrill ex good for beginners?⌄
Mega Excadrill ex is not the easiest deck for a first build. It runs two separate evolution lines - a Stage 1 line in Mega Excadrill ex and a Stage 2 line in Metagross via Beldum and Metang - and managing both while tracking Metal Maker activations across four Metang takes some practice. If you are comfortable with multi-stage evolution decks and enjoy planning your Energy attachments carefully each turn, the deck rewards that attention. The core engine of Metal Maker into Maximum Drilling is logical once you have played it a few times, but expect a learning curve of several games before it clicks.
02What are the key cards in Mega Excadrill ex?⌄
The most important cards are Metang, Mega Excadrill ex, and Genesect ex. Metang's Metal Maker Ability is the engine: it looks at the top four cards of your deck each turn and attaches any Basic Metal Energy found there to your Pokémon in any way you like, loading Mega Excadrill ex far faster than manual attachment alone. Genesect ex's Metallic Signal Ability searches your deck for up to two Evolution Metal Pokémon per turn, so you reliably find Metang and Metagross when you need them. Mega Excadrill ex itself is the payoff - 340 HP and Maximum Drilling hitting for 330 damage when fully loaded.
03How much does a Mega Excadrill ex deck cost in the UK?⌄
Every card at the cheapest printing we list comes to £100.30 at today's prices, and we can send 14 of the 60 cards today (£19.76). Prices and stock change daily, so the list above always shows the current figures.
04Is Mega Excadrill ex Standard legal?⌄
Yes. Every card in this list is legal in the current Standard format (TEF-30C).
05Where does this list come from?⌄
