Basic Box at a glance
- Stacks Grass Energy via Teal Dance, draws into more resources each attach, then hits hard with a roster of Basic attackers
- Suits players who like having options every turn rather than following a single rigid line
- Rated Easy - every Pokémon in the deck is Basic, so setup is immediate with no evolution timing to manage
How Basic Box wins
The deck's engine starts with Teal Mask Ogerpon ex. Its Teal Dance ability lets you attach a Basic Grass Energy from your hand to it once per turn, and each time you do, you draw a card. That single ability compounds quickly: more energy on the field means more damage from Myriad Leaf Shower, which does 30 damage plus 30 more for each Energy attached to both Active Pokémon. Getting three or four Energy onto Ogerpon early turns it into a serious threat while the draw effect keeps your hand stocked.
Mega Kangaskhan ex backs the engine up with its Run Errand ability, which lets you draw 2 cards once per turn while it is in the Active Spot. Rotating Kangaskhan into the Active position on turns where you need cards rather than damage is a genuine strategic choice, and its 300 HP means it survives long enough to matter. When you do want to attack with it, Rapid-Fire Combo costs three Colorless Energy and starts at 200 damage, climbing by 50 for each heads on a run of coin flips.
The support Pokémon each solve a specific problem. Latias ex's Skyliner ability removes Retreat Cost for all your Basic Pokémon, which with a wide bench means you can swap attackers freely every turn without spending Energy. Iron Leaves ex's Rapid Vernier ability lets you switch it from the bench to the Active Spot the moment you play it, and also move any amount of Energy from your other Pokémon onto it - so a loaded Ogerpon can hand its Energy off to Iron Leaves ex, which then hits for 180 with Prism Edge. Iron Crown ex's Cobalt Command pumps damage for all your Future Pokémon by 20, boosting Iron Leaves ex among others.
Crispin ties the energy side together. As a Supporter, it searches your deck for up to 2 Basic Energy of different types, puts one into your hand, and attaches the other directly to one of your Pokémon. Four copies of Crispin alongside six Grass Energy and a mixed energy suite means you can reliably fuel Teal Dance turns while also powering Colorless and off-type attackers. Area Zero Underdepths expands your bench to 8 Pokémon while you have Tera Pokémon in play, giving you room to assemble the full toolkit.

Your first turns, and what to aim for
Your first priority is getting Teal Mask Ogerpon ex into play and a Grass Energy in hand so Teal Dance fires on turn one. Use Ultra Ball, discarding two cards to search any Pokémon you need, and lean on Meowth ex's Last-Ditch Catch ability - played from the bench, it searches your deck for a Supporter and puts it into your hand - to fetch Crispin on the first couple of turns. Crispin then finds two Basic Energy of different types, attaches one, and puts the other in hand ready for Teal Dance. Latias ex should hit the bench early so your entire roster retreats for free from that point on.
From the second turn onwards you want a bench of five or more Basic Pokémon, expanded to up to 8 with Area Zero Underdepths while you have a Tera Pokémon in play. Keep Energy Switch (four copies) ready to move Basic Energy between Pokémon as your attacking plan shifts. If you need a sudden pivot, dropping Iron Leaves ex from your hand triggers Rapid Vernier immediately - switch it to Active and move Energy from Teal Mask Ogerpon ex or wherever it sits across to Iron Leaves ex, then attack with Prism Edge for 180, boosted to 200 by Iron Crown ex's Cobalt Command if it is on your bench. Fezandipiti ex's Flip the Script ability draws 3 cards if any of your Pokémon were knocked out the previous turn, giving you a refill exactly when you need it most to keep the pressure going.

Basic Box, answered
Quick answers about playing and building this deck.
01Is Basic Box good for beginners?⌄
Yes, Basic Box is well suited to players who are new to the competitive Pokémon TCG. Every single Pokémon in the deck is a Basic, which means you never have to plan around evolution timing or worry about having the right stage in hand at the right moment. You put them straight into play, abilities like Teal Dance and Run Errand activate immediately, and Latias ex's Skyliner ability means retreating costs nothing. The trainer suite is also straightforward: Ultra Ball searches for Pokémon, Crispin finds and attaches Energy, and Energy Switch moves it around. There are eleven distinct trainer cards, which is a manageable number to learn.
02What are the key cards in Basic Box?⌄
The four most important cards are Teal Mask Ogerpon ex, Mega Kangaskhan ex, Latias ex and Crispin. Teal Mask Ogerpon ex is the engine - its Teal Dance ability attaches a Grass Energy from your hand and draws a card, fuelling both your board and your hand in one action. Mega Kangaskhan ex is the draw backup, using Run Errand to draw 2 cards when it is Active. Latias ex's Skyliner makes all your Basic Pokémon free to retreat, which unlocks the whole flexibility of the roster. Four copies of Crispin search and attach Basic Energy of two different types each time, keeping every attacker fuelled regardless of type.
03How much does a Basic Box deck cost in the UK?⌄
Every card at the cheapest printing we list comes to £143.12 at today's prices, and we can send 8 of the 60 cards today (£8.52). Prices and stock change daily, so the list above always shows the current figures.
04Is Basic Box Standard legal?⌄
