New to the game?

What is Magic: The Gathering?

Magic: The Gathering is the original trading card game, created by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. Each player builds a deck of lands, creatures and spells and casts them to reduce their opponents from 20 life to zero.

How a game plays

Each turn you play lands to make mana, then spend that mana to cast creatures, instants, sorceries and other spells. Attack with your creatures, block with defenders, and use removal and combat tricks to control the board until an opponent runs out of life.

What's new in Fallout?

Fallout brought the wasteland to Magic: The Gathering as four ready-to-play 100-card Commander decks, released on 8 March 2024. Each deck has two traditional foil legendary commanders and a Collector Booster sample pack, and the set adds rad counters and Junk tokens while bringing back squad and energy.

Hail, Caesar

Red-white-black tokens. Whenever you attack, Caesar, Legion's Emperor lets you sacrifice another creature to make two hasty Soldier tokens that join the attack, draw a card, or deal damage equal to the number of creature tokens you control. The squad mechanic keeps the board full, and Mr. House, President and CEO is the alternate commander, rolling dice for 3/3 Robots and Treasure. Standouts include Skullclamp, Martial Coup and Anguished Unmaking.

Mutant Menace

Black-green-blue counters and mill. The Wise Mothman gives every player a rad counter when it enters or attacks, and whenever nonland cards are milled it spreads +1/+1 counters across your creatures, so the whole table feeds your board. The Master, Transcendent, the alternate commander, puts milled creatures from any graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. Standouts include Hardened Scales, Tireless Tracker and Winding Constrictor.

Science!

Blue-white-red artifacts and energy. Dr. Madison Li gets you energy whenever you cast an artifact spell, then spends it to give a creature trample and haste, draw cards or return an artifact from your graveyard. Liberty Prime, Recharged is the alternate commander: an 8/8 robot with vigilance, trample and haste that runs on energy. Standouts include Mystic Forge, Panharmonicon and Steel Overseer.

Scrappy Survivors

Red-green-white Equipment and Auras. When Dogmeat, Ever Loyal enters it mills five cards and returns an Aura or Equipment to your hand, and whenever an enchanted or equipped creature attacks you make a Junk token to cash in for the top card of your library. Preston Garvey, Minuteman is the alternate commander and turns your lands into Settlements that tap for any colour. Standouts include Puresteel Paladin, Rancor and Path to Exile.

Rad counters

New mechanic. At the start of your precombat main phase, a player with rad counters mills that many cards, then loses 1 life and removes a rad counter for each nonland card milled. Mutant Menace builds around it, and The Wise Mothman hands them to everyone.

Is Fallout worth it?

Our take, based on the cards and products revealed so far.

For players. Four distinct, upgrade-friendly decks: tokens, counters, artifacts and Voltron, each with a strong reprint package.

For collectors. The decks are the main way to get the Fallout commanders, and every deck comes with its two commanders in traditional foil.

Worth it if

  • You want a ready-to-play Commander deck with a clear theme.
  • You are a Fallout fan: Caesar, Dogmeat, Liberty Prime and The Wise Mothman all lead decks.

Think twice if

  • You only want one or two of the reprints: buying those singles may be cheaper than a whole deck.
